Why I Switched to Everforest
A deep dive into the Everforest color scheme and why it's perfect for long coding sessions.
Table of Contents
After years of jumping between color schemes, I finally settled on Everforest. Here’s why it stuck.
The Problem with Popular Themes
Most popular themes are designed for short bursts of work. They look flashy and impressive, but after 8 hours of staring at a screen, your eyes start to protest. High contrast isn’t always the answer.
What Makes Everforest Different
Everforest draws inspiration from nature. The colors are muted, warm, and intentionally low-contrast. It feels like working in a forest cabin rather than a neon-lit cyberpunk city.
The Color Philosophy
- Backgrounds use earthy greens and browns
- Foreground text is a soft, warm grey
- Accents are muted versions of red, green, and blue
- Everything feels cohesive and calm
My Setup
I use Everforest Medium across all my tools:
" Neovim configuration
let g:everforest_background = 'medium'
let g:everforest_enable_italic = 1
colorscheme everforest
The Results
After switching to Everforest:
- I code longer without eye strain
- I sleep better (less blue light)
- My workspace feels cohesive across all apps
